Digital zooming takes the central portion of the image and enlarges it. The camera crops a portion of the image, then it enlarges it back to its original size, the smaller the sensor the larger is the zoom effect. But during this, the image loses its quality. You find this in most of the mobile phones now and this is not that important of a feature, that is always exaggerated and an irrelevant feature that is used as a marketing ploy. Digital zoom uses interpolation that estimates the value of the new pixels rather than simply duplicating existing pixels. The same thing can be done using other cropping techniques or applications like Photoshop, which is better than the digital zoom. Optical zoom is a much better option than digital zoom.
